Important Terms (In Plain English)

  • Tracking – to follow internet or email activity
  • Cookie – a small piece of data sent from a website and stored in your  browser while you browse that website.  When you go back to this website the cookie or code notifies the website of your previous activity
  • Web Bug – this is an object that is embedded into a web page or email and is usually invisible to us but allows third parties to check that you have viewed the page or email.
  • Pixel – in very simple terms this is the smallest single component of an image
  • Beacon – alternative name for a web bug
  • PII – Personally identifiable information.  This is information that can be used on its own or in conjunction with other information to identify a single person.  E.g., your address, your date of birth, a photograph of you, your browser behaviour along with your IP address, GPS location etc
  • PDS  – personal data system
  • PIMS – personal information management service
  • CASL – Canadian Anti-Spam Law
  • Cloud – Cloud computing means storing and accessing data and programs over the Internet instead of your computer’s hard drive
